Institute of Epidemiology and Statistics was established in May, 2005 based on the former epidemiology teaching and researching section (established in 1954) and health statistics teaching and research section (established in 1984).

Basic Information

Our institute now has 1 professor, 7 associate professors, 6 lecturers and several international and domestic part-time professors from Yale University, University of Hawaii, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Gansu Provincial Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, etc. Academic faculties include 1 doctor supervisor and 11 master supervisors, 8 of them had Ph.D. degree, 1 is Ph.D. candidate. Professor Bai also known as the first-class of leadership in Gansu, Outstanding Experts of Gansu, “555” talent project for innovation and academic leaders for science and technology in Gansu, etc. We started to offer master’s degree in epidemiology and health statistics since 2004, currently enrolled 4 doctor and 62 master students, 4 graduated doctors and 74 graduated Masters.

Epidemiology, health statistics, medical statistics, medical ethics, and health behavior courses are currently available for undergraduate students. Modern epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, advanced health statistics, modern medical statistics, field investigation techniques in medicine, and project evaluation in medicine courses are offered for postgraduate students. One of our team members has won the “Gardener in Higher Education” Award, and 1 teacher has won the “Talent in Young Teachers” Award, 4 teachers have won first or second prize in the school-level or provincial level teaching competition. Two team members have won the “national teaching champion of the young and middle-aged teachers” and won the first prize in the provincial-level teaching competition. The course “Epidemiology” has been selected as the national excellent course.

Over 400 papers has published in the most famous academic publications which including 81 papers (published by ‘International journal of epidemiology’, ‘Chemosphere’, ‘International journal of environmental research and public health’, ‘Biomedical and environmental sciences’, et.al.) indexed by SCI, 209 papers indexed by CSCD.

Academic Monographs

We have edited 2 academic monographs including 《Guidelines for birth defects intervention》 and 《Applied medical statistics》, and co-edit 8 academic monographs that used for undergraduates, including《Epidemiology and Biostatistics》、《Epidemiology》、《Medical statistics and Computer Experiments》、《Health Project Evaluation》which used for graduates, and《Health Statistics》(fifth edition)、《Medical statistics》(sixth edition)、《Managerial Epidemiology》(first edition).

Research projects

Complete more than 30 research projects during the past 5 years. 6 projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) which including 3 ongoing programs, 1 key project funded by ‘national 12th Five-year plan’, 2 science and technology supporting projects funded by ‘national 11th Five-year plan’ (one of the two is ongoing study), 1 major special science and technology project funded by the ‘national 12th Five-year plan’ (ongoing study), 1 major special health care reform project funded by the ‘national 12th Five-year Plan’ (ongoing study), 1 national key research and development plan project (ongoing study), 1 key special projects of ‘precision medical research’ from national key research and development plan (ongoing study), and 2 international cooperation projects. 1 project of Social Science Foundation of China, 1 project of Humanities and Social Foundation of the Ministry of Education of China. Also, we are undertaking 1 key special project of “the Belt and Road” plan, 1 key project of “basic research service of government university”, and 5 health care and health expenditure relating projects of Gansu province.
