Institute of Occupational & Environmental Health is one of six research and educational institutes at School of Public Health of Lanzh University, and covers two subjects including Environmental hygiene and Occupational health & occupational medicine. The Institute's mission is to develop the profession of occupational & environmental health, conduct undergraduate and postgraduate education, basic and applied research and serve the public interest.
The history of the institute can be traced back to two independent departments of Occupational Health and Environmental Health, established by former Lanzhou Medical University in 1984. In 2001, according to the principle of establishing  institute unit at sub-discipline, the two departments were merged into the Department of Occupational & Environmental Health. In 2002, the Occupational & Environmental Health was approved as a provincial key subject of Gansu Province. In November 2004, the former Lanzhou Medical College was merged into Lanzhou University, and the Institute of Occupational & Environmental Health  has been retained till now.
Under the leadership of many experts and professors such as Prof. Baoshan Yuan and Prof. Yingtong Wang, the discipline has achieved considerable development in discipline construction, personnel training, scientific research, laboratory construction and other aspects. Also, the institute has the reasonable academic echelon, stable research directions, outstanding characteristics and strong social service ability to cultivate high-quality postgraduate students.
The institute offers the related professional courses for undergraduate students and provides a series of master degree programs.

Teaching

The courses provided for undergraduates include Environmental Hygiene, Occupational Health and Occupational Medicine, Environment and Health, Introduction to General Medicine.
Courses for graduates include Molecular Biology, Modern Medical Information Processing and Technological Innovation, Biomarker Application.

Talent Training

As a Master degree authorized training unit, there are eight master’s supervisors. Up to now, there are more than 100 students for Master degree in study (70 of them graduated). Many graduate students have won the title of outstanding graduates of Lanzhou University and outstanding members of the Communist Youth League of Gansu Province. Many students have obtained the opportunity to study abroad provided by China Scholarship Council.

International Exchange

The institute attaches great importance to international exchanges, and has established good cooperative relations with New York University and the University of California, Berkeley, and jointly undertakes a number of cooperative research projects such as the NIH project and the Geological Geography Society of the United States. Several teachers have been selected actively to visit Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States for academic exchanges.

Public Services

Teachers of the institute focus on personnel training, scientific research and public service work on major regional health-related issues. We have completed a number of provincial and municipal plans including the Gansu province’s 13th Five-Year Plan for Health and Population, the Gansu Provincial Medical and Health Service System Plan (2016-2020), and the establishment of Environmental Protection Model City Plan in Jinchang City (involving environmental protection, regional health development, health industry and other field). Two teachers were selected into the “Gansu Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission Policy Research Expert Advisory Committee”, who played a good role in high-level health decision-making consultation. In the “Double Tops” construction, the discipline will further expand its horizons and be brave in innovation, and actively carry out researches on medical and health reform, environment and health, healthy helping poverty, healthy big data and global public health governance along the Silk Road Economic Belt.
